Fluoride is a natural substance found in water, plants, rocks and soil. Studies show that fluoride reduces caries prevalence when added to toothpaste and water supplies.
Fluoride strengthens the enamel on the tooth and helps the surface of the tooth withstand acid and sugar attacks.
Studies have shown that by adding fluoride to water supplies this helps decrease the amount of disease present in teeth. Some areas of the UK already have added fluoride in their water supplies, such as parts of the West Midlands, Birmingham and Newcastle upon Tyne at 1ppm (part per million). To find out how much fluoride is in your water supply please contact your local water board.
